The Benefits of Joining a Women’s Group

By Kayla Faherty

Have you been thinking of joining a women’s group?  Perhaps you doubt you’ll have the time to commit to such a group.  Perhaps you are worried it might not be a good fit.  Perhaps you have been putting it off for quite some time.  Perhaps you wonder if you will have anything to contribute.  I was in those shoes for a while, not sure it would be worth the time or energy to be involved with a women’s group at church. I was searching for something, but was hesitant to take the first step.  But after some months, I finally went for it.  And I am so glad I did.  Let me share with you some of the benefits of joining a women’s group.

·Deepen your relationship with Jesus.  Whether it is a Bible study group, a book study group, a faith sharing group, a fellowship group, or a combination of any of those types of groups, you will have the opportunity to more fully accept God’s love for you and deepen your faith.  You will learn about aspects of Scripture, the Saints, Catholic teaching, and any number of other topics.  You will learn practical skills for your spiritual life, such as reading the Bible, praying, partaking of the sacraments, and sharing our faith with others.  It all starts with a personal relationship with Jesus, and learning how to place God in the center of your life.

In our women’s group I am surprised by how much I am learning about our faith.  I am able to accept God’s love for me personally, and am able to trust in Him more.  I am so thankful for the many blessings in my life.  And I am challenged to live our faith more fully in my day-to-day life.

·Foster relationships with fellow women.  Whether it is a small group or a large group, you will have the opportunity to create relationships with other women.  Proverbs 27:17 states “Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.”  As you learn from each other you can grow in wisdom through your conversations.  You will be encouraged by other women who are at different places on the journey, and you will be able to walk alongside them in friendship.  You will be given an opportunity to love others more fully.

I have met some remarkable women.  And our women’s group gives me the opportunity to get to know them and be encouraged by them.  I am able to create friendships as we learn together.  I am able to listen to them and share with them.

·Realize your true self.  Whether you intentionally set out to learn more about who you are or not, you will have the opportunity to recognize who God created you to be.  You will be able to discover gifts and talents you can share with others.  You will be encouraged to discern God’s will for your life and more fully embrace your vocation, whatever it may be.  You will be able to recognize yourself as a valuable member of the Church, and find your place in this life.

I didn’t expect to learn much about myself.  But our women’s group gave me the chance to examine myself so that I can become the best version of myself.  I am able to better accept God’s will for my life and to serve Him with a greater love.

I have gained so much from the women’s group at our church.  My relationship with God and His people have been strengthened.  If you have been considering joining a women’s group, I want to encourage you to join.  Because of my simple yes, the Holy Spirit is accomplishing far more than I could have imagined.  And if your church doesn’t have a women’s group, perhaps you could start one.  Our group is currently in the middle of the Endow study course “Letter to Women”.  You can find a group and learn more at www.endowgroups.org
